Lima, January 21, 2007
２００７年　１月２１日、リマ

Aloha from Lima, Peru! I wish everyone in the WUB community a Happy and
Prosperous 2007!

ペルーのリマからアロハ！　ワブコミュニティーの皆さんが素敵な２００７年
を過ごしているかと思います。

I have finally arrived home to Lima from my participation in the Asia
Pacific Leadership Program (APLP) at the East West Center in Honolulu,
HI. I feel so honored to have taken part in such a unique learning
experience with such a talented group of young professionals from all
over the world.

ハワイ州ホノルル市内にある東西センターでのアジア・パシフィック・リーダ
ーシップ・プログラム（APLP）を終えて、とうとう私は故郷のリマへ帰ってき
ました。世界中の才能あふれる若者たちとこのようなユニークな研修に参加で
きることができ、非常に光栄に思います。

Soon after writing my mid-semester report posted on this site in October,
we embarked on a 10-day study trip to New York City and Washington D.C.
We visited the United Nations Headquarters, The Department of State,
World Bank, IFC, and talked to dozens of government and non-profit
experts about a wide range of topics concerning U.S. and Asia Pacific
relations.

１０月に掲載させていただいた私の中間研修報告を書き終えた直後、私たち研
修生は１０日間のニューヨークとワシントンD.Cでの研修旅行へ出発しました。
国連本部や国務省、世界銀行、国際金融公社などを訪れ、政府やNPOの要人とア
ジア太平洋地域とアメリカに関連するさまざまな議題について話し合いました
。

In mid-November, I visited Maui and met Clarence Uehara, President of
WUB-Maui. Mr. Uehara took me on a tour of
“A Day in the Life of a Maui Uchinanchu” and introduced me to many Maui
Uchinanchu professionals actively engaged with the Maui community, among
them Mayor Alan Arakawa, and Glenn Goya of Morgan Stanley.

１１月の中頃、私はWUB・マウイ支部長であるクレアンス・上原さんにお会いし
ました。上原さんは「マウイのウチナーンチュの一日」と題したツアーを決行
し、マウイ市長のアラン・新川さん、モーガンスタンレー社のグレン・呉屋さ
んといったマウイコミュニティーで活躍する多くのウチナーンチュを紹介して
くださいました。

My APLP experience culminated with a 3 week field study to Vietnam. Upon
arrival we witnessed the impressive economic growth and development that
is transforming Vietnam into one of the most exciting and vibrant cities
in Southeast Asia, just as we had learned in our classroom in Honolulu.
I came to understand how globalization is rapidly changing Vietnam
’s economic and social landscape through conversations with Huong
Nguyen, a young and cosmopolitan Vietnamese manager for a multinational
corporation. She guided us through the Mekong Delta region and
introduced us to her family in her native rural village in southern
Vietnam. As we traveled through Ho Chi Minh City, Southern Delta region,
Hoi An, Hanoi and Sapa, we met with equally bright, young Vietnamese who
are proudly trailblazing change for their country. In Hanoi, we attended
the East West Center International Conference
“Building an Asia Pacific Community for Sustainable Development”. The
APLP groups participated with six panel discussions; my group
presentation was entitled
“Social Entrepreneurship.”

APLPの経験ではベトナムでの三週間の現地研修が最も印象に残っています。ベ
トナムの地にたどり着いたとたん、私たちは東南アジア最大の刺激的でエキサ
イティングな都市へとべトナムを変える劇的な経済成長と発展を目の当たりに
しました。それは私たちがハワイの教室で学んだ内容そのままでした。若さあ
ふれる国際人でありと同時に、ベトナムの多国籍企業の経営者であるフアン・
ングェンさんとの会話を通して、私はグローバリゼーションが急速にベトナム
の経済と国土を変えていくのを理解し始めました。彼女はメコン川の三角州地
帯を案内してくださった後、南ベトナムの農村にすむ彼女の家族を紹介してく
ださいました。ホーチミンシティー、南部の三角州地帯、ホイアン、ハノイそ
してサパを見て回る内に、誇りを持って、先駆的に母国を変えていく聡明で若
いベトナム人の皆さんとお会いしました。ハノイでは、「持続可能な発展のた
めのアジア太平洋コミュニティーの設立」と題した東西センターの国際会議に
参加し、APLPのグループは６つのパネルディスカッションを担当しました。私
のグループは「社会的企業家の精神」というテーマでディスカッションを行い
ました。

Finally, after graduating from the APLP in Vietnam, I met with Robert
Nakasone in Okinawa. With Mr. Nakasone, I met Okinawa Governor Hirokazu
Nakaima, Honorary Consul of Peru Morimasa Goya, Okinawa International
Exchange & Human Resources Development Foundation officers, the Okinawa
chapter of East West Center Alumni and local media Ryukyu Shimpo and
Okinawa Times.

とうとうベトナムでのAPLPの修了式を終えて、沖縄ではロバート仲宗根さんと
お会いしました。仲宗根さんと共に、仲井間弘多県知事、ペルー名誉領事呉屋
守将さん、県国際交流・人材育成財団のみなさん、東西センター同窓会沖縄支
部のみなさん、そして地元紙の琉球新報と沖縄タイムスの記者らとお会いしま
した。

APLP challenges all its participants to navigate change through an
intense, engaging, inspiring and ultimately rewarding curriculum.

Now I feel the change happening within: my outlook on our world has
positively changed by learning from my colleagues and mentors, by
visiting new places, and by being open to new and invigorating
experiences and ideas. I also feel the change happening for our
communities: the personal relationships established through the APLP and
WUB networks are the building blocks to a solid foundation for
cross-cultural understanding and collective growth.

APLPは参加者全員に、真剣で、魅力的で、気持ちを鼓舞させてくれるような、
しかし究極的には自身の糧となるカリキュラムを通して現状の変化を促す事を
要求します。先生方や友人らから学び、未知の場所を訪れ、そして新鮮で刺激
的な経験や考えに対して心を開くことによって、世界に向ける視野がはっきり
と変わっていくのを心の内に感じています。
また、私たちのコミュニティーもまた変化が起きているのを感じています。APLP
とWUBのネットワークを通して出来上がった人と人のつながりは異文化理解や共
通の成長のための確固とした基礎作りのための土台になっています。

I am truly thankful to WUB International for providing the WUB APLP
Endowment Scholarship. Special Mahalo Nui Loa to Robert Nakasone, Edward
Kuba, John Tasato, Clarence Uehara and Mitsuhiro Akamine (President,
WUB-Peru) for their mentorship and support. And finally,
“ippe nihe deebiru” to members of WUB-Hawaii, WUB-Maui, WUB-Okinawa and
WUB-Peru for their encouragement and support.

WUB・APLP奨学金を与えてくださったWUBインターナショナルへ心からの感謝を
申し上げたいと思います。また、ロバート仲宗根さん、エドワード・久場さん
、ジョン・田里さん、クレアンス・上原さん、ミツヒロ・赤嶺さん（WUBペルー
支部会長）たちには本当にお世話になりました。最後に、WUBハワイ支部、マウ
イ支部、沖縄支部そしてペルー支部のみなさんへ激励と支援を頂いた事に、「
イッペニフェーデビル」！
