Dollars to Yen exchange, and other money ideas

OK, there has been a bunch of discussions on best way to exchange money from US Dollars to Japanese Yen. Place your thoughts here...

I've heard we should change anywhere from USD$1,000 to $3,000, depending on if you're a shopper or not.

I heard several different ways/places to exchange money...and what a decent exchange rate is... I do know exchanging money at a bank in Japan can be a slow and tedious task. I had to show passport, sign forms, wait for approvals, etc, etc, just to change a few hundred dollars.

So, any suggestions for places to exchange money to Yen?

Okinawa is a great place to shop. You'll find all kinds of stuff. I even buy everyday kind stuffs - pens, notebooks, strapping tape, scissors, etc. There are 100 yen stores and Lawsons (like a 711 stores) and best to use yen.

I've exchanged travelers checks at the airport. The exchange rate is a little better with travelers checks then cash. We will have at least a couple hour layover in Japan. Even at the airport got plenty of shopping to do.

I've also exchanged money at the hotel, but they don't always have yen and Daniel is correct.

Changing Money

For a trip to Japan in 2005, I shopped around and think I got the best rate from Central Pacific Bank - downtown branch (their fee wasn't a percentage, but a flat charge like $5 or something). But this may have changed since then.
